Intercom pricing in 2026, explained (with the math)

Intercom's pricing page is beautiful and slightly evasive, so here is the plain version, current as of July 2026. We build Clickalong, an Intercom alternative, so factor that in, but the numbers below are Intercom's own, and the math is just math.

The three meters

Your Intercom bill assembles from three independent meters:

  1. Seats. Essential $29/seat/month, Advanced $85, Expert $132 (annual billing; monthly is $39/$99/$139).
  2. Fin outcomes. The AI agent costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan. An "outcome" is counted when the customer confirms resolution, when they don't follow up after Fin's answer, or when Fin completes a workflow, including handing off to your team.
  3. Add-ons. Copilot (AI assistant for agents) $29/seat/month annual ($35 monthly). Proactive Support Plus from $99/month. Usage channels (SMS, WhatsApp, email campaigns) bill separately.

The word "outcome" deserves attention: it is broader than "resolution." A conversation where Fin answers twice and the customer silently leaves is an outcome. A workflow that ends in a human handoff can be an outcome. The meter is designed generously, in Intercom's direction.

Worked examples

Solo founder, Essential, light AI. 1 seat ($29) + 100 Fin outcomes ($99) = $128/month. The AI costs 3× the seat.

Three-person team, Essential, real AI volume. 3 seats ($87) + 400 outcomes ($396) = $483/month, before Copilot. Add Copilot for all three: $570/month.

Ten-person team, Advanced. 10 seats ($850) + 1,500 outcomes ($1,485) + Copilot ($290) = $2,625/month, or over $31k/year.

Notice the structure: the better Fin performs, the more you pay. Deflection improvements read as cost increases. Budgeting requires forecasting your own support volume, the thing you were hoping the AI would make irrelevant.

When Intercom is worth it

Honesty cuts both ways. Intercom earns the bill when:

  • You need omnichannel (WhatsApp, SMS, phone, social) under one roof.
  • You're an enterprise needing SSO, HIPAA support, multibrand, SLAs (Expert tier).
  • Fin's quality on huge messy knowledge bases matters more than its price.
  • You'll use the outbound suite (campaigns, banners, product tours add-on) heavily.

How teams cut the bill

  • Audit Lite seats. Advanced includes 20 free Lite seats; many "viewers" don't need full seats.
  • Gate Fin. Restrict Fin to segments or hours where it demonstrably resolves; every low-quality outcome is $0.99.
  • Kill silent outcomes. Tune the no-follow-up window and escalation paths so half-answers don't bill as wins.
  • Check the startup program. Eligible early-stage companies get up to 93% off the first year. The discount expires; the habits don't.

The structural alternative

The uncomfortable part is that no configuration removes the shape of the model: seats × plan + $0.99 × success. If you want a bill that doesn't move, you need a different shape.

That's the model we chose for Clickalong: $49/month per workspace, flat, covering 10 teammates, 3,000 AI answers/month, guided product tours, a shared inbox, and a help center. There's a free plan with 200 answers/month, and the full Clickalong vs Intercom breakdown shows exactly where each tool wins. Frequently asked questions

Does Intercom have a free plan?

No. There's a 14-day trial (no credit card) and a startup program with discounts up to 93% for eligible early-stage companies. The cheapest ongoing price is Essential at $29/seat/month billed annually, plus Fin usage.

What does Fin actually cost?

$0.99 per outcome on every plan. Outcomes include confirmed resolutions, conversations with no follow-up after Fin replies, and completed workflows, including some that end in human handoff. One charge per conversation maximum.

How much does Intercom cost for a small team?

A 3-seat team on Essential (annual) pays $87/month for seats. With 400 Fin outcomes that's $483/month; with Copilot for everyone, about $570/month, roughly $6,800/year as of July 2026.
