Intercom is a good product with a pricing model that punishes growth. You pay per seat ($29 to $132/month each, as of July 2026), then $0.99 for every conversation Fin resolves, then again for add-ons like Copilot ($29 to $35/seat). Teams leave Intercom because the invoice became a forecasting problem, not because the product stopped working.
This list is for that moment. Full disclosure up front: we build Clickalong, the first tool below, and we've kept our bias honest by stating exactly who each alternative is best for, including the cases where it isn't us. All prices were checked against public pricing pages in July 2026.
How we picked
- Transparent pricing. You should be able to predict your bill from the pricing page.
- Real AI, stated plainly. If AI answers are metered, we say what the meter costs.
- Human handoff. A bot without a clean path to your team is a dead end.
- Setup effort. All of these install in a day; most in an hour.
1. Clickalong: flat-rate AI support with guided tours
That's us, so judge accordingly. Clickalong is an AI tutor that lives in your SaaS: it answers questions only from the docs you approve (with citations, refusing when it doesn't know), walks users through tasks with guided tours over your real interface, and hands the conversation to a realtime shared inbox when a human is needed.
- Pricing: Free plan (10 teammates, 200 AI answers/month, 10 docs, 5 tours). Pro is $49/month per workspace, flat, which covers 10 teammates, 3,000 AI answers/month, unlimited docs and tours, and no branding. Nothing is billed per resolution.
- Best for: SaaS teams whose ticket volume is mostly "how do I do X?"
- Watch out: No omnichannel (WhatsApp, SMS, phone), because it's built for in-product support. See the full Clickalong vs Intercom comparison.
2. Crisp: omnichannel inbox at workspace prices
Crisp charges per workspace, not per seat: Free (2 seats), Mini $45, Essentials $95, Plus $295. The Essentials tier adds WhatsApp, Instagram, a knowledge base, and its AI chatbot, with AI usage billed via credits (about $25 ≈ 450 AI conversations).
- Best for: Teams that want many channels in one inbox without per-seat math.
- Watch out: AI is a separate meter, and there are no in-app product tours. Our take: Clickalong vs Crisp.
3. Chatwoot: open source, self-hostable
Chatwoot's cloud runs $0 (2 agents) to $19 to $99/agent/month, and the open-source version self-hosts for free. Its AI layer (Captain) is credit-based on cloud plans.
- Best for: Engineering-led teams that want control, data residency, or zero licence cost.
- Watch out: Self-hosting is a real operational job; the polish is a step behind commercial rivals.
4. Tidio: ecommerce-first chat with Lyro AI
Tidio meters billable conversations per plan (Free covers 50/month; paid tiers from ~$29) and bills its Lyro AI agent separately, from $32.50/month for 50 AI conversations, roughly $0.65 each.
- Best for: Ecommerce stores, especially on Shopify.
- Watch out: Two meters (conversations + Lyro) make the effective price hard to predict. Details: Clickalong vs Tidio.
5. Help Scout: email-first support, human-sized
Help Scout runs $25 to $75/user/month with a small free tier (5 users, 1 inbox). Its AI Answers add-on is billed like Fin: $0.75 per resolution.
- Best for: Teams that live in shared email inboxes and want a humane, mature tool.
- Watch out: Per-user pricing plus per-resolution AI reproduces Intercom's cost curve, just gentler.
6. Zendesk: the ticket-ops standard
The full Suite starts at $55/agent/month (Team) and $115 (Professional); the email-only Support plan is $19/agent. AI Copilot is a $50/agent add-on.
- Best for: Support organizations that need SLAs, routing, phone/IVR, and deep reporting.
- Watch out: Costs assemble from parts; small teams pay enterprise-shaped prices for capable tiers. Compared directly: Clickalong vs Zendesk.
7. Freshdesk: sane per-agent ticketing
Freshdesk runs $19 (Growth), $55 (Pro), $89 (Enterprise) per agent/month. Freddy AI includes 500 sessions, then $49 per 100 sessions; Copilot is $29/agent.
- Best for: Email/ticket operations on a budget, or teams already on Freshworks.
- Watch out: The permanent free plan is gone (what remains is a six-month free program for two agents), and AI session fees stack on per-agent fees. More: Clickalong vs Freshdesk.
8. Chatbase: bot-from-docs platform
Chatbase turns your docs into a bot in an afternoon: Free (50 message credits/month), Hobby $32, Standard $120 (4,000 credits, helpdesk features), Pro $400. Removing "Powered by Chatbase" costs $1,188/year.
- Best for: Embedding a standalone Q&A bot across many properties, or voice-agent experiments.
- Watch out: Credits, seat add-ons ($300/year each), and branding removal add up; the human-inbox side is younger. Full comparison: Clickalong vs Chatbase.
